History

At St Mary’s Primary School, we believe a high-quality history education will help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. We intend to deliver a well-planned curriculum with engaging cross-curricular topics using Cornerstones as a vehicle to ensure that pupils have the knowledge and skills to equip them for future learning. Children will learn the key vocabulary to enable them to make connections and deepen their chronological understanding. Furthermore, they will develop their understanding of key historical concepts outlined in the National Curriculum.

At St Mary's, we recognise that a whole-school systematic approach to delivering quality history is fundamental to our success. A clear progression of knowledge and skills enables pupils to build on prior learning whilst learning through each Cornerstones topic.  When history is not the lead subject, it is woven in, ensuring that pupils revisit, retrieve and apply key knowledge.  We aim to inspire children in order that they gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s history and that of the wider world which helps to stimulate their curiosity to discover more about the past. Additionally, we make full use of resources within the immediate and wider local area, through planning memorable trips and experiences that ensure children develop a deep understanding of the rich history of their locality.
