Minerva Learning Trust celebrate anniversary of Apollo landing – One Giant Leap
Over 100 pupils in the Minerva Learning Trust Choir came together to perform a cantata written especially to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the landing on the moon. in1969. Local composer and musician Geof Edge created an exciting and engaging narrative in words and song to tell the story of Apollo 11 celebrating human creativity and endeavour. Using images of the time, recordings of the astronauts, and original story and songs, the Minerva Learning Trust Choir brought that epic journey to life.
Geof Edge said, “ This was truly effective storytelling from the MLT choir, soloist and small groups; excellent timing and delivery from the narrators and all supported by the lighting, audio and wonderfully emotive imagery”.
The choirs in all the schools had been practising all year and when they came together the effect of the massed voices was electrifying. Students also studied the topic of the moon landing in Science and their work, including some very creative artistic responses, was on display at the Sir John Colfox Academy for the performance.
“This was a very challenging project,” said Kay Taylor, Executive Principal of the Minerva Learning. Trust. “It was musically challenging for the choir and technically challenging for the staff but it was incredibly worthwhile. The final performance was stunning”.
This was the third annual performance of the Minerva Learning Trust Choir and the investment in music in the Trust is having a significant impact. The Choir is sponsored by the Burton Bradstock Festival of Music and Art and the music strategy in the Trust has also been generously supported by Palmers Brewery.
David Powell, who has lead the music strategy in the Trust, commented, 'The MLT Choir reached new heights of performance at the Apollo concert. It is evidence of what can be achieved in our schools if we invest in high quality musicians like Geof Edge to work with them'
